Did you make any resolutions?

Whether or not you have actually gotten a start on those resolutions, this month we’ll look at getting clear on what you want in the year ahead and why it’s so helpful to do so.

You’ve probably heard of the business school study in which those graduates who wrote down their goals earned ten times more than those who did not. Even if increasing your earning capacity doesn’t motivate you, imagine how it would feel to increase the likelihood of achieving your goals by simply writing them down.

You’ll need to begin with a vision, a picture of what it is you want. Let’s say this is the year you are really going to get fit. You really are going to improve your diet, start a regular exercise plan, and get more sleep.

Where do you start?

First of all, find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted for several minutes. Now, settle down, get quiet and let your imagination run wild. Even if you don’t know exactly what you’ll be doing, imagine the feeling of it. Imagine waking up in the morning, feeling rested and energetic. Imagine getting more done during the day. Imagine sustaining that energy all day. next day. Focus on the sense of well-being, really feel it in your body.

Next, gather some magazines you no longer need. Flip through and find pictures and words representing the images and feelings you’ve envisioned. Add photos or objects. Now, put it all together by making a collage. Be outlandish. Go for it. Simply glue or attach the pictures, photos and objects to a large piece of paper in a way that pleases you. You are literally creating a picture of your future.

Now, you have a vision and a physical picture as well. Take your journal and write down what you see. Again, pay attention to the positive feelings you are generating in your body. Write those down, too.

Feel free to add to, change or expand this project. Once you have one goal in place, try it again with something else. For example, imagine finally taking care of all the little projects around your apartment or house. Imagine how good it would feel to have all those nagging little things off your mind. Again, find pictures and words that represent the feelings you would like to have. Create a collage or artistic display of the images.

Notice what happens as you clarify your vision and goals and write them down, and keep the vision in front of you.

Have fun!

All good wishes for a healthy and happy New Year,

Please jump in and respond on this blog, by clicking the green 'Comments' link just below.

If you are new to blogging, here are some instructions.

Below are three ways to practice imperfection----and get things done!

START, DON’T STOP

Try this. Make a quick list of all of the projects, tasks, and work you haven’t even started because you thought you couldn’t do it perfectly. Think about the novel you’ve envisioned for years but haven’t started because you needed to take one more writing class. Or the journal project you promised yourself you would begin five years ago, but you didn’t have just the right journal to get started. Keep the list handy so you are aware each time you stop yourself from starting.

“GET BY” LIST

Take five minutes and make a list of everything you can think of that you need to do in the next week that doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to get done. Use the list to remind yourself that done is better than perfect. Sometimes to just “get by,” is really all you need to do. For example, you might need to wrap holiday gifts. Do the best you can to get by. You need to send greeting cards. Set a timer and challenge yourself to get done, rather than write the perfect message.

EAT AN ELEPHANT

You know the old joke, “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer, of course, is one bite at a time. Think about a project you know you have been delaying or avoiding. You know what they are---cleaning out a closet shelf, writing a proposal, studying for a test. Let’s say you have promised yourself to write a story for your young niece this year. Take out your calendar or Blackberry and right now, note when you will begin the draft of your story. Then note when you will finish the draft. Next note when you will begin editing the story. Do the project one bite at a time.

Imagine the personal and professional benefits if you were able to get to more of the tasks you need to do as well as the unfinished writing and creative projects in your life, finished. Remember, done may be better than perfect!

Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season!

If you find you could use some help getting organized, schedule a GRATIS SAMPLE COACHING SESSION via phone or in person to find out if writing & creativity coaching is for you.

Phone (800) 552-WRITE, that's (800) 552-9748 or write to me at susan@susanborkin.com to find out more.

Take good care,

Please jump in and respond on this blog, by clicking the green 'Comments' link just below.

If you are new to blogging, here are some instructions. I want my writing to come from a deep place, sometimes even mysterious and dark. I want to type with fervor in a grand hotel like Jack Nicholson’s character in “The Shining” (but having a way better outcome)!

I’ve noticed for the most part however, a strange and curious thing about the creative process. What I’ve become aware of, although drawn to these dramatic images of the creative person at work, is how very ordinary the creative process usually is. I’ve also noticed that my most creative work usually comes from a beginning place of order rather than chaos, artistic or otherwise.

At times it has struck me odd and counterintuitive that the beginning task of the creative process is often one of cleaning up or creating order.I simply do better, write better and feel better when I’m more organized. It’s taken me a long time to realize this and I by no means have gotten this all together. But I have learned some things I’d like to share with you. Here are five tips for getting your writing and creative work organized.

CLEAR YOUR WRITING OR CREATIVE SPACE:

Even if you have piles of papers to file, sort or process, clear your immediate working area. Give yourself the gift of clear working space. Remove everything from your desk, table or work surface that you don’t need. Keep only necessary tools (pen, paper, journal, computer), a few well-chosen inspirational objects (pictures, framed quotes, rocks or shells) and a beverage. Try it and notice how you feel without the visual distractions pulling your attention away.

DEVELOP AN EASY TO USE FILING SYSTEM:

This is a critically important issue for writers and other creative people because we tend to accumulate so much “stuff.” David Allen, author of Getting Things Done suggests a filing method that uses one simple alphabetical system for all reference material. He suggests printed labels on file folders because they are clear, easy to read, help you find what you’re looking for and re-file folders you’ve used.

DO IT YOUR WAY:

At one point or another, you’ll have to go through and process whatever piles have accumulated. Since for most creative people, creating is lots more fun than organizing, you’ll want to find a way to get to your organizational tasks with the least amount of resistance. Try sorting your papers in a room with a nice view. Listen to upbeat music while you work. Set a timer and stick with it for half and hour and then reward yourself with a phone call to a friend or reading a few pages of a mystery. Set the timer again and do one more sprint for the day.

SYSTEMATICALLY SCHEDULE TIME:

As creative people we tend to think we don’t have time to organize. That combined with not enjoying the process can make organizing a low priority task. You’ll need to schedule time to organize like you do appointments, meetings and other commitments. Start slowly. Can you schedule ten minutes today to begin to file, sort or process whatever is most needing to be looked at? Good! Now just schedule ten minutes more for tomorrow. Notice how you feel when you keep this commitment to yourself.

GET INSPIRED TO GET ORGANIZED:

I watch, listen for, read about and borrow ideas about organizing from other people all the time. Look for others who are organized in the way you would like to be and ask them for suggestions. There are also several useful books on getting organized. Here are some of my favorites:

Organizing From the Inside Out by Julie Morgenstern

Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui by Karen Kingston

It’s Hard to Make a Difference When You Can’t Find Your Keys (I love this title!) by Marilyn Paul

Getting and staying organized is an ongoing job. It is also critical if you are seriously committed to your creative work. Your degree of organization (or lack of it) can significantly influence your lifestyle and quality of life. Yet, it can be a difficult topic to discuss, much less ask for help.

Here are some beginning areas to consider in assessing the disorganization in your life:

In What Specific Ways is Disorganization Holding You Back? It can be painful to look at, but over the next few days, begin to list the ways in which your lack of organization makes your life difficult:

Do you run late for appointments, meetings and dates with others?

Do you have trouble locating important documents, bills or even your keys?

Does your lack of organization cause you to feel pressured and stressed?

Does your lack of organization impact your relationships with others?

Does disorganization impact your writing and creative life?

What Parts of Your Life are Organized? We tend to think of organization in black and white terms. Almost no one is completely organized or completely disorganized. List the areas of your life that are organized and see what you can learn from this. Consider your writing and creative projects, desk, car, closet and even your refrigerator.

Begin to Imagine What it Would Feel Like to Take Control and Get Organized. Once you have determined how disorganization is holding you back and the areas in which you actually are organized, spend some time visualizing living as completely organized a life as possible. Visualize and imagine:

What would your new organized life look like?

What would your ideal organized life feel like?

What do you imagine would happen to your creative spirit if you were more organized?

Becoming Organized is a Process. In reality, the areas of your life that are less organized than you would like, didn’t get that way overnight. Be gentle with yourself as you explore the changes you would like to make. To make changes and move toward greater organization will happen one small step at a time.

Next month we’ll continue to look at ways to get more organized and the impact it will have on your writing and creative life. Stay tuned!
All best to you,

If you could use some help getting organized, schedule a GRATIS SAMPLE COACHING SESSION via phone or in person to find out if writing and creativity coaching is for you. Phone (800) 552-WRITE, that's (800) 552-9748 or write to me at susan@susanborkin.com to find out more.

Please jump in and respond on this blog, by clicking the green 'Comments' link just below.

If you are new to blogging, here are some instructions. All you need is your journal or a notebook and a pen.

Next, start writing! Write what’s on your mind, what you notice, how your body feels, how you have no idea what to write about. Or write to answer the question, “What’s happening right now?” or “What do I need right now?"

Follow this rule: Keep writing. Other than that, there are no rules. Don’t even think about syntax, grammar or punctuation. Creative spelling is encouraged. This does not have to be a finished piece of writing. It is only a starting point.

Finally, keep at your Free Form practice for several days in a row. Like kindling on a campfire, soon the sparks will ignite and in no time you will have a roaring creative fire!

Write to me at susan@susanborkin.com and let me know what happened!

Take good care,

If you could use some help getting back on track, schedule a GRATIS SAMPLE COACHING SESSION via phone or in person to find out if writing and creativity coaching is for you.

Phone (800) 552-WRITE, that's (800) 552-9748 or write to me at susan@susanborkin.com to find out more.

Please jump in and respond on this blog, by clicking the green 'Comments' link just below.

If you are new to blogging, here are some instructions. Get creative with these last few weeks of summer before school starts and fall programs begin.

Grab your journal to make notes and find a quiet, private spot. Then try these three ways to savor what remains of these precious summer days.

SAVOR THE MEMORY

When you’ve settled in, close your eyes and take several deep breaths. Let your breathing slow and deepen. Now, remember three absolutely favorite moments of the summer so far.

One of mine was watching my grandsons play with a Lego set with intense concentration and total involvement in their task. What do you remember? A walk on the beach as a cold wave lapped at your ankles? Cotton candy at a state fair tasting just as good as you remembered it from childhood? Pause, remember and make some notes.

SAVOR THE PRESENT

Today, right now, stop whatever you are doing (even reading this article!) What are you aware of? What do you notice as you look around? What do you see that brings you pleasure?

I’m sitting in my office as I write this, a Steven Halpern CD, in the background. I stop for a moment and let the music wash over me; hearing each individual instrument and the harmony as the sounds meld. I smile as I look more closely at a portrait on a wall calendar, seeing details in the picture I never noticed before. Stay present with your experience. Then, make some notes.

SAVOR THE FUTURE

As you settle, become more relaxed and take a couple of deep breaths, use your imagination and think of something coming up in the near future. Are you going camping in the woods next weekend? Are you anticipating an exceptionally mouth-watering meal?

As I close my eyes, I think about getting back to a laugh out loud book I have been reading. I think of the farmer’s market I’ll shop at in a few days and the taste of ripe strawberries. Write down what you anticipate and increase the depth of your savoring.

You get the idea. So, is there a cure for the summertime blues? Try savoring your experiences---before, after and during. It’s practically guaranteed to cure the summertime blues!

Take good care,

If you could use some help with a creative project, schedule a GRATIS SAMPLE COACHING SESSION via phone or in person to find out if writing and creativity coaching is for you.

Phone (800) 552-WRITE, that's (800) 552-9748 or write to me at susan@susanborkin.com to find out more.

Please jump in and respond on this blog, by clicking the green 'Comments' link just below.

If you are new to blogging, here are some instructions. Keeping a travel journal doesn’t have to be a drag. It can actually enhance your trip. Below are ten tips to integrate writing into your travel adventures!

Just having an intention to be making notes while traveling will help you pay more attention to what you’re doing, seeing and experiencing.

Don’t just write about where you’ve been, what you ate for dinner, etc., write about how you feel about your travel adventures.

Save ticket stubs, maps and other mementos so your travel journal becomes more of a scrapbook. (For some great ideas see collage artist Erin Perry’s website, www.alteredbythesea.com)

Incorporate photos into your travel journal.Go beyond tourist sites. Take pictures of what is meaningful and beautiful to you.

Describe new smells, tastes and sounds. Use your senses and be descriptive. Here’s an example: The smell of early morning rain delighted me. I love the fresh, wet dirt, perfect for digging with discarded Popsicle sticks and the ticklish feeling of a worm in the palm of my hand.

Let yourself fantasize and imagine possibilities. Make up stories about what it would be like to live in a different place and have a different lifestyle. One of the joys of travel is getting a new perspective

Pay attention to details of new surroundings. Note specifics you may want to use in a book or article at a later time. Listen for new words and dialects.

As you would do if you were at home, don’t write when you’re too tired. Write when you have a few minutes, in-between things. You’re entries or notes don’t have to be perfect, just get it down!

Learn to make notes in your own shorthand. Abbreviate, write in phrases, quickly jot down main points or make sketches to help you remember.

Be curious and open. Ask questions when you meet new people. Find out from local folks what’s unique or different about their home.

Have fun and happy traveling!

I’ve just finished a particularly challenging few months completing two big projects not directly related to my work. I suspect what is going on is that what I really want to do is goof off and not work all that much. However, there are some things that I absolutely need to get done.

What do you do when this happens? Make work play, of course! I came up with a few ideas and want to pass them along to you:

CAN I MAKE A GAME OUT OF THIS?

This is essentially an eat dessert first way of thinking, but sometimes it works. For example, I like to begin working with my desk cleared off. If the surface of my desk is covered with papers, books and yesterday’s mail, I consider how long it would take to clear my desk and put everything away. I set my timer for that amount of time and see if I can “beat the clock” and actually finish the task faster.

IS THERE ANYTHING FUN ABOUT THIS?

Most any task can be broken down into small bites. For example, I am currently starting to work on creating an online class that requires quite a bit of writing and planning. (I’ll let you know when it’s done and available!) It is not the kind of project that can be completed in one sitting. There are several things I might try. I enjoy mind maps, so I could create a fast mind map to start gathering ideas. Since the completed project is apt to be multi-media, and I love watching films, I could review some film clips I am considering. Sometimes starting with even a small task that is fun can be motivating for less interesting parts of a larger project.

REMEMBER TO REWARD YOURSELF

I frequently forget to reward myself when I accomplish something I have set out to do. No wonder I get grouchy the next time I have to do a similar task! For example if I have planned to write for ten hours this week and I either do that amount of writing or exceed that amount of writing, I definitely must take myself out on an Artist’s Date. Do remember to make the reward equivalent to the task you have completed.

I would love to hear what happens with your attempts at making work fun. Blurters dump everything out on the page and then have to sort through to find the good stuff. Bleeders struggle with every word they write so it comes out perfectly.

There is a wonderful scene from a film called “Finding Forrester” in which Sean Connery plays the title role as a former prize-winning, now reclusive writer. He befriends a talented young man and mentors him. When his student hesitates before writing a single word, Forrester tells him to punch the keys. The youth responds, “I’m thinking.” “No” says Forrester, “Not now! The first draft is from your heart; the second draft is from your head.”

I’m with Forrester on this one. Where being a bleeder is critical for a final draft, much more writing will get done if you are blurter. Here are several thoughts to consider about blurting:

Tell yourself, this draft doesn’t matter; after all it’s just a first draft and you are still exploring what you want to write about

You are more likely to sit down and start writing if your first draft doesn’t count

You may be surprised at how much of your blurted draft is actually not bad

Think about blurting as warm-up writing, like practicing scales on a piano

Set a kitchen timer for ten minutes, write continuously and see how much you can get done

Starting is the most difficult part of writing; so sit down and start blurting!

I would love to hear what happens with your blurting. It was from a young woman named Hannah who wrote, “Just wanted to let you know that one of your graduates is at bookstores and on Kindles everywhere! Couldn't have done it without you!”

Hannah has given me permission to share her story with you. (See www.HannahJSchwartz.com for information on the just published Under Wraps and other upcoming books in the series).

A few years ago, Hannah took a day-long workshop from me called “Practical Strategies for New & Beginning Writers.” (Yes! This is the very same workshop available in home study format and that will be repeated live on April 9—see the events section of the newsletter).

In truth, Hannah was hardly a beginning writer, but she had quit her job to write full time. Then, came the dreaded writer’s block.

But as you may have guessed from the photo above, (that’s Hannah on the left), that didn’t stop this determined writer. She kept at it, joining one of our Writing Circles. (Yes! This is the very same Writing Circle starting soon in the San Jose, California area and available virtually by phone, twice monthly—see the events section of the newsletter).

Hannah showed up, session after session. She wrote, day after day. She will tell you that some days were certainly better than others. She may even tell you the creative ways she figured out how to avoid writing.

But what’s important in this story is that she kept at it. She has a three-series book contract and more books on the way.

I can’t promise that every student and every client story will end this way, but I can remind you why in every single book you ever read, authors tell us they didn’t get through the process alone.

Keep writing; get help and get support. I would be delighted to share your success story!

Take good care,

If you could use some help with a creative project, schedule a GRATIS SAMPLE COACHING SESSION via phone or in person to find out if writing & creativity coaching is for you.

Phone (800) 552-WRITE, that's (800) 552-9748 or write to me at susan@susanborkin.com to find out more.

Please jump in and respond on this blog, by clicking the green 'Comments' link just below.

If you are new to blogging, here are some instructions. It’s something I have always wanted to do. To see the costume workroom, the dressing rooms, the space where the stage sets are created, and the green room was a thrill for this theatre lover! Then a few days later while watching the Academy Awards, I again thought of all the work that goes on behind the scenes.

Isn’t this similar to what goes on in the creative process? It’s fun to think a theatre production or a glamorous show is magic. You might be in awe of a new book, a painting or a piece of art. Yet, let’s look at all that goes on behind the curtain.

PLANNING & PREPARATION

Can you imagine creating a play or writing a book without some sort of planning? Even writing a short article requires forethought. Sometimes within the process of creating, you may be fortunate enough to move to a state of what Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls “flow,” when ideas come without effort. However, most of the time, a considerable amount of planning is required. Envisioning the finished product or performance, having the requisite tools and equipment are only part of the planning and preparation process.

LONG HOURS

When actress Natalie Portman was interviewed about her role in the film “Black Swan” she talked about the months of work it took her to learn to perform her ballet scenes, even while learning from world class dancers. Can you imagine her winning an Oscar without having put in that time? Can you imagine a well-written book being created on one Saturday afternoon? What you don’t see is the hours upon hours required behind the scenes to produce work of value.

PRACTICE and REHEARSAL

Remember when you learned to ride a bicycle? First it seemed as if you would never be able to learn the necessary balance. Then, undoubtedly you fell off over and over. But eventually, the training wheels came off and you were able to ride. Actors repeat scenes over and over in rehearsal. Musicians play a piece of music time and time again. Writers write drafts and more drafts. What looks easy when finished, required much repetitive practice and rehearsal.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Along with hours and hours of planning, practice and rehearsal, creating art often requires much attention to detail. Dress rehearsals correct small changes, editors pick up errors, artists remove and change colors, shapes and sizes. It is this attention to detail that makes your art or writing outstanding.

LAST MINUTE CHANGES and SURPRISES

In spite of planning, practice and attention to detail, the unexpected will happen. A guitar string will break, a computer with your completed chapter will crash, or you will stub your toe or hurt your hand. The fabric you want will be out of stock, your drawing will get stained or your printing project will be delayed. Last minute changes and surprises are a part of creating.

The next time you marvel at a polished performance or stare in awe at a piece of art or wipe tears away after reading a touching story, remember the planning, hours, practice, attention to detail and surprises that undoubtedly accompanied this creation. Remember too, that these steps are required in any creative process that is worth doing. Within minutes I feel completely overwhelmed with the myriad of tasks confronting me. I decided to look carefully at the word O-V-E-R-W-H-E-L-M and see if it could offer me any clues. Here’s what I came up with:

Organize – Good organization can actually save time, energy, and wear and tear on your nerves. You do not have to organize everything in your life all at once! Try this---take one small project, a single drawer, shelf or pile and organize it. Observe the impact it has on you.

aVoidance – I am not suggesting you practice avoidance, but rather avoid it. Avoiding something that you know needs to be done simply adds to your sense of overwhelm. Instead, try doing one small task per day that you would rather avoid, and notice how it makes you feel.

Exercise – Although sometimes it can seem like a real effort to get to the gym or outdoors for a walk, paradoxically, you’ll feel more energetic if you exercise. I find writing exercise into my calendar as a scheduled activity makes it more likely to happen.

Realistic – Ask yourself if what you are trying to accomplish in a single day is realistic. Look at your daily schedule as though it belonged to someone else. Is it realistic or is it bound to make you feel overwhelmed?

Write – Of course, you knew I would say this as a journaling expert. Even if it’s only for ten minutes a day, writing can help you focus, clarify your goals and clear your head of ongoing chatter. Get it out of your head and onto paper.

Healthy – Sometimes when faced with a decision, I’m not quite sure what to do. I might ask myself, “What is the healthiest choice for right now?” Suddenly the answer becomes clearer.

Excellent vs. Good Enough – Although this will be annoying to perfectionists, changing your standards from excellent to good enough will work about ninety percent of the time. Reserve perfection for those things that absolutely deserve it.

Leverage – This is not the same as multi-tasking, but about how to best leverage your time. Make a larger amount of soup than you need, then freeze the rest in meal-size portions. Buy everyday household items in as large a quantity as you have space to store. Purchase gifts as you see them and put them away in a particular place.

Meditate – Like writing and exercise, making meditation a daily practice pays big dividends. Start with just a few minutes a day to quiet your mind. Attach meditation to some other activity (like before you write) and notice what happens.

I hope this list of ideas hasn’t overwhelmed you! If so, let me know.

Take good care,

If you find you could use some help managing overwhelm, schedule a GRATIS SAMPLE COACHING SESSION via phone or in person to find out if writing & creativity coaching is for you.

Phone (800) 552-WRITE, that's (800) 552-9748 or write to me at susan@susanborkin.com to find out more.

Please jump in and respond on this blog, by clicking the green 'Comments' link just below.

If you are new to blogging, here are some instructions. The beginning of a new year is such a great time to use this method, I decided to introduce or re-introduce it to you.

An “I Want” list has a much different feel than a list of New Year resolutions. It’s not a matter of recording the usual “shoulds and oughts,” but using the energy and power of what you truly desire. Here are several suggestions to begin:

SET SOME TIME ASIDE. This doesn’t have to take long, not more than twenty minutes. Even that can be broken up into smaller chunks.

MAKE SURE YOU WON’T BE INTERRUPTED. Close your door, turn off your phone, and silence your e-mail message alert.

CLOSE YOUR EYES AND LET YOUR BREATHING SLOW. It may take a few moments to settle down, but stay with it.

WHEN YOU ARE READY, QUICKY SKETCH, DRAW OR LIST THE AREAS OF YOUR LIFE THAT ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU. This might include family, self-care, work, creativity, health, or personal or spiritual growth.

AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN, RESPOND IN EACH AREA TO THE QUESTION, “WHAT DO I REALLY WANT?” In as much as possible, do this without editing. This is not about being practical, but about letting the energy of what you want carry you forward.

Try this exercise several times throughout the month. If it appeals to you, take your list a step further and create a collage or sketch to illustrate what you want.

Let us know what happens!

Take good care,

Please jump in and respond on this blog, by clicking the green 'Comments' link just below the P.S.

If you are new to blogging, here are some instructions. If you do not have one of the listed accounts, please choose either Name/URL or Anonymous from the profile list before you click 'Post Comment'.

If you find you could use some help managing your creative life and your busy schedule, arrange a GRATIS SAMPLE COACHING SESSION via phone or in person to find out if writing & creativity coaching is for you.

Phone (800) 552-WRITE, that's (800) 552-9748 or write to me at susan@susanborkin.com to find out more.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR CREATIVE FIRE BURNING STRAIGHT THROUGH THE HOLIDAY SEASON

How many times have you said, “After the holidays, I’ll……” Fill in the blank. Okay. Now stop counting and listen up! Try these tips to keep your creative fire burning straight through the holiday season.

PRACTICE GOOD WRITING HYGIENE. Attach your regular writing practice to a habit you do every day no matter what the season. Think about flossing your teeth or taking your vitamins. You don’t stop just because your schedule gets busier.

LEARN CREATIVE CROSS TRAINING. What happens when you miss your morning work out at the gym? You can always walk later in the day, while shopping, running errands or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. If you must skip your morning writing practice, use that creative energy in other ways. Write an especially heartfelt note in a holiday card. Or rather than just slogging through your things to do list, CONSCIOUSLY bring your creativity to the task at hand---whether it’s arranging flowers, decorating or baking cookies.

BE SATISFIED WITH LESS PROGRESS, but do something! If you usually write for 20 minutes a day, experiment for a few weeks with a shorter writing practice. Challenge yourself by setting a timer for a very short focused writing session. Even 10 minutes will work. You’ll stay more connected to your writing than if you didn’t write at all.

CAPTURE IDEAS AS THEY COME. Snag ideas as they come to you even if you’re super busy. Don’t wait to have a blank page staring you in the face for that writing project due next month. Use Post-its, note cards, a paper file or computer file to drop in ideas, catchy phrases or brilliant insights the moment they occur. It will take you just seconds to capture the thought and you’ll have it for use later.

REMEMBER YOUR ARTIST’S DATES. If this season feels like you’re giving gifts to everyone but yourself, it’s especially important to remember to take time for your own renewal. As you’re purchasing that bodywork gift certificate for someone else, schedule your own massage appointment while you’re at it. Hitting the bookstore with a shopping list for others? Plan in extra time to relax and browse for yourself.

PLAN YOUR NEXT VACATION. Now? Right in the middle of everything? Yep. It may be the best time to at least block out the dates for your next vacation, get away weekend or personal day off. Just knowing that time is already scheduled will do wonders for your energy level and mood.

KEEP THE BIG PICTURE IN MIND. Slow down. The film, “The Bucket List,” depicts the story of two men who meet in a hospital, both diagnosed with terminal cancer. They create a bucket list, a list of all the things they want to do before they, well, “kick the bucket.” They leave the hospital AMA and get started checking items off the list.

The film is both funny and deeply touching. Because no matter how cleverly the actors portray the concept, we are left with two very sobering facts. Fact One: No matter what, each of us will die at some point. Fact Two: We each can determine what to put on our own bucket list.

Stop for a moment and consider what’s on your bucket list. Maybe you have never thought of doing this before. Or maybe you have thought about it, but never written it down.

Today or the next day take a few minutes and get a start on your bucket list. Don’t stop and think about it. Just write it down. You won’t necessarily finish it all in one sitting, but keep at it until the list really represents what’s important to you.

Now consider this. If you think about it, every day is a small bucket. We can fill it with whatever we wish. Here’s an experiment to try. Get a container and fill it with something tiny like sand, pebbles or uncooked legumes. Now take several fairly good-sized rocks and try to fit them inside the container.
What happens?

The rocks didn’t fit, did they? Now do this again and this time put in the rocks first. Once you’ve done that, add the sand, pebbles or legumes. What happened? If you put the rocks in first, you can get the smaller things to fill in between the rocks. But if you put the small things in first, no matter what you do, you’ll never fit the rocks in.

This is a great metaphor for our creative life. The big rocks represent your journal, that half finished novel, the article you have been intending to write, your unfinished thesis. The sand or pebbles represent everything else---errands, doing things for other people, groceries, the dishes, the laundry. We somehow manage to get those things done. But what about the big rocks?

Here’s a peek at a mini-film we’re currently launching. Click here to view: http://www.TheBucketMovie.com. Remember to dump out the pebbles and sand and put the big rocks in first.

Take good care,

View the film and share your thoughts! Okay, I admit it, not just naps for the kids, but for me! Having occasional bouts of insomnia, I have found the art of napping to be a true blessing. This month we’ll explore how to use naps and a good night’s sleep as a writing and creativity enhancer.

ASK A GOOD QUESTION BEFORE YOU NOD OFF

Just before you close your eyes before bed or a nap, ask a question about a current project. You might ask “What’s bothering me about the character in chapter 4 of my novel?” Or, “Where am I stuck with the copy for my website?” You might be wondering, “What would be the best market for the article I want to write about my recent trip?”

You need not limit yourself to asking questions about your writing or creative life. You may have relationship or career choice questions. You may have questions about your spiritual life or larger questions about your life purpose. This technique will work in any area of your life.

Your brain is like a search engine, just waiting to begin scanning for an answer to your question.

Try to let go and trust that whatever information you do get is meant to be helpful or guide you in some way.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE LANGUAGE OF YOUR DREAMS

Once you ask the question, know that the creative process is already underway. But because it is a creative process, you don’t necessarily know the format in which your answer will come.

Information may come in the form of a dream. You may see yourself on a stage performing, with the words you were searching for coming in the lyrics of a song.
Or, your dream may be more of a treasure hunt. Perhaps you see yourself walking along a path, picking up objects as clues to a new direction.

Your answer may be quite concrete and obvious or it may need some interpretation. Sometimes the answer to your question will be more subtle than you expect. For example, if I am stuck with writing copy for my website, I may get an image of tangled string or of something trapped in a maze. Perhaps I’ve become tangled in my words or trapped myself by making the project too complex.

The more open you are to the information you receive, whatever the format, the more useful it will be.

BE PREPARED FOR ANSWERS TO COME IN UNEXPECTED WAYS

While dreams and images are the most common ways to receive information from sleep writing questions, be prepared for answers to come at other times.

There may be times when you don’t remember a dream at all. Or, you may get no images at all upon awakening.

However, thoughts or ideas may come to you in the shower, later in the day or while out on a walk. It will seem as though the ideas came “out of the blue.”

Keep experimenting and notice what happens. Try both sleep writing before going to bed at night or prior to a catnap during the day.

SLEEP WRITING HAS A CUMULATIVE EFFECT

Quite simply, the more often you ask questions and write down the answers you receive, the more information you will get. If you use this technique on a regular basis you will find yourself getting increasingly better results.

Over time, sleep writing will give you a new perspective on issues that have challenged you. It will help you develop a sense of curiosity and wonder. Keep track of your questions and the answers you receive over time. You will be surprised at the profound impact sleep writing can have.

By the way, guess where I got the idea for this article? Following a nap, of course!

Take good care,

Please jump in and respond on this blog, by clicking the green 'Comments' link just below the P.S. You’ll more than make up the time in the new perspective you’ll gain.

REVIEW YOUR WRITING AND CREATIVITY GOALS:

Think about what you promised yourself you would accomplish this year with your writing. There are still four months left this year---plenty of time to attack that novel in process, query a few more articles or get caught up in your personal journal.

This fall, don’t let your kids have all the fun! Create a bountiful learning experience and celebrate the harvest season with your own Back to School assignments.

Take good care,

We would love to hear about your back to school plans! If you have been lucky enough to go on vacation, a weekend away or even a mini-vacation this summer, below are eight suggestions for managing your travel notes.

Update Your Travel Journal. Assuming you took notes in your travel journal (of course you did, didn’t you?), go through them now and update and fill-in anything that’s missing. If for some reason, you did little or no journaling on your vacation, do so now!

Done is Better Than Perfect. Don’t wait to find the perfect journal or album for your notes and pictures. Find something that will work and is good enough. Two months from now you’ll appreciate having a finished journal or album rather than a shoebox full of unsorted odds and ends waiting for the perfect journal.

Combine Things in New Ways. Try mixing and matching styles. Of course you can put your photos in a standard photo album. But try putting some photos next to post cards in your journal. Put ticket stubs next to a map. Add 3-dimensional objects like buttons, coins or match covers.

Add Interest to Your Journal With Collage. Once you’re home, you can add magazine pictures, word phrases or cartoons to enhance your journal entries. Add what pleases you.

Use Your Maps. Finished with that map that guided you through a new city? Line the inside of your journal with it or cut the map apart and highlight special places you visited.

Be Your Own Travel Advisor. Make notes to yourself about what you would and would not want to visit or do again. The sooner you write this down, the better. After a few weeks back home you’re apt to forget the special tea you found or the name of the cozy bookstore you discovered.

Advise Yourself on Packing Tips. Once you’re home and unpacked, make notes about what you brought with you. Did you take too many shoes? (Who me? This month, I’m addressing how to enjoy writing while traveling and how to make it a creative part of your travels.

Incorporate photos into your travel journal. Go beyond tourist sites.

One of the joys of travel is getting a new perspective.

We would love to hear about your travel adventures! Please jump in and respond on this blog, by clicking the green 'Comments' link just below the P.S. (Note: If you are the first, it will say '0 Comments' - just click that link.)

Take good care,

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I miss the last day of the school year marking the beginning of summer. I miss the long days of what felt like endless stretches of time. I miss playing outdoors until the last vestige of sun sets in a glorious pink, orange and purple glow.

Unless you have a job or work that allows you several weeks off a year, you might also long for your own childhood memories of summer vacation. This month I’d like to share some tips on how to create mini-vacations, no matter how little actual vacation time you have.

What are the benefits of a mini-vacation? You’ll find yourself more relaxed, energetic, focused and creative. Try the ideas below and add your own to the list!

Get outdoors. Take a long walk, hike or even just a walk around the block.

Be in nature. Sit quietly near a tree, in a meadow or on the grass. Watch closely what is going on around you.

<span style="font-size-adjust: none; Or better yet, take a child with you.

<span style="font-size-adjust: none; It also gave me pause to think about my own journaling practice of late. In so doing, I pronounced it wimpy. That’s the Bad News, admitting it. Here’s the Good News; it prompted me to do something about it.

What had happened to my journaling practice? How had I gotten so disconnected from it? To a hardcore journal writer like me, that translated to, “How had I gotten so disconnected from myself.”

The usual suspects came to mind---busyness, travel, family, distractions, projects. You name it; I let it get in the way.

But I did mention Good News. And here it is. Once I finally got back to daily journaling, I remembered how good it felt. I remembered the deep sigh of relief once I got started. She loves diaries!"

The next time the boys stayed with us for the weekend, I arranged a special shopping trip with Brody. While his brother Kai stayed home with Grandpa and worked on a complex Lego project, Brody and I hit the local bookstore.

Fortified with Starburst candy to ward off "car sickness," we spent half an hour looking at diaries. Brody carefully examined each diary, his forehead wrinkled in concentration. Finally he handed me two books. One had colorful '60's style peace symbols and the other was dark gray, done in dragon motif.

"One is to take home and the other one is to leave at your house when I come to visit."

But of course! Who am I to argue with logic like that?

When we arrived at home, Brody carefully labeled both diaries with his name.

Next, came the important pencil decision. Would it be sparkly purple, a thin navy blue mechanical pencil or, a Zebra #2, HB, 0.7mm mechanical? The Zebra pencil won.

Finally, where would the Grandma's house journal be stored? Obviously, somewhere in the "boys' room" (AKA, the guest bedroom.), perched carefully on a bookshelf.

Dinner that night was described as "Grandma made a feast." Grandpa's special eggs for breakfast were labeled "awesome."

How do I know what Brody wrote in his journal? He chose to carefully read every word aloud to us. Twice.

Later that evening, after the boys had returned to their home, I sat quietly by myself in my home office. I certainly was not a wimpy grandmother! But my own journaling practice was looking a bit, well, wimpy.

I took a moment to experience the gratitude I felt for my eight-year-old, diary-keeping grandson. Then I sat down to write.

P.S. Already, just like that? It may have taken you a few months to settle into the New Year, but now that it's here, you may be wondering where the time has gone! You may also be wondering, "Whatever happened to those New Year's resolutions?" Or you may be denying them, as in "What New Year's resolutions?" Or you simply may have avoided New Year's resolutions all together.

Whatever happened to that list of "I promise I'll really get to it this year" stuff that's looking a bit daunting about now, here are some suggestions to get re-energized.

BREAK BIG PROJECTS INTO TINY STEPS
A friend of mine recently reminded me of the old joke, "How do you eat an elephant?" The answer, of course, is "One bite at a time." Go back to your list of goals or resolutions for the year and focus on one project at a time. Break down the project into as many small bite-sized pieces as possible. Here's an example. Many of my clients have mentioned getting stuck on creative projects like putting photos in albums. This can feel like an overwhelming amount of work, taking all the pleasure out of it. Break down the project into cropping pictures or arranging photos one page at a time. Or take a small stack of pictures and sort or purge. That's all you have to do. Breaking any project into small pieces makes it infinitely more do able and a lot more fun.

WE ALL BITE OFF MORE THAN WE CAN CHEW
What looked perfectly reasonable to accomplish two months ago may no longer be realistic. You know, life enters in---your computer crashes, your car develops a mysterious leak, your child gets the flu. When you made your goal list at the end of last year or the first few days at the beginning of this year, there was no way you could have anticipated exactly what would be happening every single day. You can be clear, organized, focused and things still happen to you without your consent. No need to abandon the list. Take some time, get quiet and gently look at your list of goals or resolutions. You may just want to re-vamp and update it a bit.

KEEP THE GOAL; CHANGE THE DEADLINE
One of the most important things I ever learned about goal setting was to keep the goal if I really wanted it and believed in it. I have learned, however, to change the deadline. If I possibly can, I allow myself to change the due date, moving it slightly ahead instead of dropping the project all together. Things make take two or three times as long as we had anticipated. Your original deadline may simply have not been realistic. There are certain deadlines we do need to keep to like registration deadlines or other cut-off dates. On-going, creative projects may need a little more flexibility. This is not permission to procrastinate; but you might just be a little kinder. Keep the goal, move the deadline out a bit and keep going.

LET GO OF HAVING IT BE PERFECT
I frequently say to my writing clients, (as well as to myself!) "Done is better than perfect." Finishing a writing project, a draft of a short story or the draft of your novel is more important than having it be perfect. Being able to attain perfection is a myth if it blocks the creative process. That's what editors are for, to help with rewriting, untangling and clarity. For now, just aim to finish what you're working on and leave the fixing up for later. Consider this thought from Joseph Chilton Pearce: "To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong."

START!
The hardest part of any creative project is getting started. Ever notice the draft feature on your e-mail program? Use it! Start your reply the moment you read an e-mail and have any thought at all how you would like to reply. Use your initial energy and first response thoughts to get started. Apply this same principle to other projects. Maybe you're not ready to write a long journal entry. But at least sit down, note the date and time and open your journal. Write for ten minutes. You can always add more later.

GET HELP VIA COACHING, MENTORING OR TRAINING
Recently I heard heard Eric Maisel, author of Coaching the Artist Within and several other books, speaking at a local bookstore. He reminded me that those of us involved in creative work might have no accountability. It is too easy to work in isolation and then shove a short story or manuscript into a drawer. Checking in with a coach, mentor or trainer provides accountability as well as support. If your creative dream or project is stalled and you can't seem to get it started, get help!

Ready to do a few revisions on those New Year resolutions? Review these ideas and get yourself re-energized and re-focused for spring!

P.S. Here are a couple of ideas to get you started:

Don't overfill your schedule. Make sure you allow some time to just sit quietly by yourself instead of rushing off to another activity amidst the busyness.

Don't use the holidays as an excuse to stop writing. Even a few minutes a day writing in your journal can be helpful.

If you do New Year's resolutions or goal planning for next year, look at what you did accomplish this past year. We tend to focus on what we didn't do instead of what we did.

Treat yourself or someone you care about to the support of a writing community. Check out the brand new International Association for Journal Writers for more information.

Take good care and remember to Write Now!

Susan

Writing & Wellness Connections Conference

Just back from Atlanta, Georgia where I attended the Third Annual Writing & Wellness Connections Conference.

I did a workshop called "Me, Myself and I: The Healing Power of Dialogues." Dialoging is a great technique I've used for decades.

Even before I was a psychotherapist, I was involved with gestalt therapy. You may have heard this therapy referred to "Two-Chair Work." It involves creating a dialogue between two parts of yourself that are somehow at odds or struggling with one another. By placing the two parts in conflict on the chairs (say your head and your heart or your child part and your adult part), you move back and forth dialoguing until a conclusion is reached.

In the 70's, I began to apply this method to writing. The written version looks somewhat like a screen play, with each of the parts or characters having their say. You can add as many characters or parts as you would like or need. You can also dialogue with other people, with your body, with your work, with a situation and so on.

This particular conference is unique in that it is multi-disciplinarian, which only serves to add to its richness. Medical professionals, therapists, teachers, writers and poets gather together. We share a passion for the healing connection between writing and wellness.

Check it out at http://www.wellnessandwritingconnections.com

Announcing the International Association for Journal Writers

Lots happening in the journaling world!

Most exciting is the announcement of the brand new International Association for Journal Writers (IAJW).
