Beach Writing & Summer Fun

During these long summer days, that glorious feeling of childhood summer vacation is in my bones!

This is the time of year when articles begin to appear in magazines and newspapers about beach reading, those paperback books you throw in your tote bag for the beach or summer vacation.

How about spending some of your summer creative time “Beach Writing?”  While you may not actually want to write at the beach (although, you may!) what can you do to have more fun with your writing and creative projects this summer?

Here are 10 ideas to have some creative summer fun:

1.    WRITE WITH YOUR NON-DOMINANT HAND

When was the last time you tried writing with your non-dominant hand?  This fun little exercise will make you feel about five years old in no time!

2.    USE YOUR CHILD’S OR GRANDCHILD’S PAINTS, MARKING PENS OR CRAYONS OR GET SOME OF YOUR OWN

Who says you can’t color, draw or paint?  Get some art supplies together and go for it!  Put on your favorite music and let your hand be guided by what you hear and feel.

3.    GO FOR A WALK OUTDOORS OR AT THE BEACH

Pick up a few rocks, shells, tiny twigs, driftwood or even sea glass.  Arrange your “treasures” in your writing space in a way that pleases you.

4.    IF IT’S RAINING OUT, GO TO YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY

Find the children’s room and locate some of your favorite books from childhood. Spend a few hours reading.

5.    PACK A PICNIC LUNCH AND WALK OR RIDE YOUR BICYCLE TO A LOCAL PARK

Pretend you are new to the area and observe what you are seeing as though you were seeing it for the first time.

6.    ORGANIZE A FEW PAGES OF A PHOTO ALBUM

Find a past vacation photo album project that’s been sitting around for a while. Organize a couple dozen pictures or put together a few album pages.  Notice how it makes you feel.

7.    PLAN A VACATION

If you haven’t planned for a summer vacation or at least a few days away in awhile, do it now.  Remember when you were a child and how much fun it was looking forward to something?  Anticipating is half the fun!

8.    GO TO A STATE OR COUNTY FAIR OR AMUSEMENT PARK

If possible, go with a child.  Look at everything around you.  Use all your senses. The next morning write a short story about a summer childhood memory or make some journal notes.

9.    GO SEE A NEW COMEDY

Or rent a film you know will make you laugh.  Make popcorn and invite someone to watch with you.

10.    SPEND SOME TIME EVERY DAY FOR WEEK PLAYING

Go find a hula-hoop, a jump rope or a set of jacks.  Find some puppets, a toy train or a bottle of liquid bubble-maker.

Now, commit to two, three or more of these ideas over the next several days. See what happens to your writing and creative process. Leave a message on our blog and let me know what happens.

Have a great summer!

Take good care,
