BACK TO SCHOOL

I have always loved the fall---the glorious changing color of the leaves, the fall harvest holidays and of course, a brand new school year!

Even if you have just finished or are still in the process of school shopping, planning and packing up your children for a new school year, have you considered your own “Back to School” plans?  What have you planned for yourself this fall?

Just because you’re formally done with school or have taken a break for a while, there’s no reason not to continue learning.  Here are five ideas to help you to create your own Back to School projects.

FIND A CLASS TO INSPIRE YOU:

Check your local community college, adult education or recreation center for a class that interests you.  What about that photography class you always said you wanted to take?  Or, what about a class on flower arranging, scrapbooking or memoir writing?

TEACH A SKILL YOU ALREADY KNOW:

Have a unique skill and enjoy interacting with others?  Many adult education programs are looking for instructors to teach new and interesting subjects.  Find out how to propose a course in your local area.  Are you a former teacher?  Consider tutoring children needing extra help.

READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

High school and college students undoubtedly have fall reading lists, but what’s on your reading list for the fall?  When is the last time you visited your local bookstore, or the public library?  Create your own book list of what you want to read for the rest of the year and set aside some reading time.

DON’T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR WEEKLY ARTIST’S DATE:

Remember to take at least an hour a week to focus on you.  Do something that replenishes you---take yourself out to lunch or coffee, shop for a new journal, work on your collage project or go to a movie.  Browse around your favorite art or fabric store.  Or go for a walk and explore a new neighborhood that looks interesting to you. You’ll more than make up the time in the new perspective you’ll gain.

REVIEW YOUR WRITING AND CREATIVITY GOALS:

Think about what you promised yourself you would accomplish this year with your writing.  There are still four months left this year---plenty of time to attack that novel in process, query a few more articles or get caught up in your personal journal.

This fall, don’t let your kids have all the fun!  Create a bountiful learning experience and celebrate the harvest season with your own Back to School assignments.

Take good care,
